Disney Vacation Club

I’m going to spill the beans on all things DVC:

My journey into DVC started in an EPCOT pub believe it or not. My husband and I were having a drink at the Rose and Crown Pub in the England Pavilion of the World Showcase (EPCOT) when we started talking to a couple having a drink at the bar next to us. The conversation started off far from DVC and membership but somehow ended up there. They told us the only thing they regretted was not buying it sooner. We took in all the information they gave us but what we mostly took from that conversation was how genuinely happy they were to talk about it and share it with some complete strangers. They even wrote their name and phone down on a pub napkin in case we wanted to ever reach out with questions. Hearing about their experience from someone who did not work for DVC, or Disney for that matter made it feel much more authentic than hearing it from someone trying to sell you a contract for their own personal gain. I remember thinking in that moment that this was going to be the most honest review of DVC I was ever going to get… and it was.

The place that started it all…

The next few months I did a lot of research on my own, without contacting Disney yet. Lucky enough, my husband happened to have a coworker who was a DVC member and who was kind enough to share her insights with us. Again, there was a common denominator in all the people we had heard from saying “we just wish we had done it sooner.”

After a lot of personal experience testimonies and reading 10000 blogs online I decided to contact Disney’s Vacation Club Department to learn more about the logistics then went in to buying a contract. I was semi convinced at this point, but I still had a lot of questions I needed clarified by an expert. I was lucky enough to be paired with a Specialist named Raven who really was phenomenal and so patient with all my questions!

P.S. If anyone wants to know more, I can give you Raven’s contact info if you message me!

    • This is the only location where you will have a fee separate from your points (Hawaii state tax)
  • You can also use points for Disney Cruise Line

Everything I’ve Learned About DVC:

  1. You will need to buy 150 points minimum for your first contract.
  2. Currently (as of July 2022), only the Villas at the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa or Disney’s Riviera Resort are for sale.
  3. This does not mean you can’t purchase at another Disney Resort…
    • Occasionally, there are owners selling some, or all of their points and you can always re-purchase them from them (through Disney DVC Specialists).
    • I don’t know too many details on this since I did not go this route, but I am sure if you want more information Raven, or any other DVC specialist could help you!
  4. You buy a minimum of 150 points at one “home” resort and then you could buy as little as 25 points at any other resort making that one also a “home” resort.
  5. Okay, so what does HOME resort mean?
    • Basically, a home resort is any Disney Resort where you own any number of points (hold a contract for).
    • You can book your home resort 11 months ahead of your trip.
    • You can still book any other Disney Resort (that is not your home resort) 7 months ahead of your trip.
    • Example: I own a contract with Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa so therefore I can plan a trip for my home resort 11 months out. If I wanted to plan a trip to the Polynesian Village Resort instead, then I have to wait until I am 7 months out since this is not my home resort.
  6. You can Bank or Borrow points.
    • Banking Points: This means if you don’t use all your 150+ points this year they will roll over to the next year and so on.
    • Borrowing Points: This is useful if for example you want to take a big trip to Aulani this year, then you can borrow as many points as you want/have from next year (1 year in advance).
  7. So, what are points?
    • Each resort and room type has a specific point value per night. To complicate this further the number of points per night varies with the dates/seasons.
    • Example: If you want to book 2 nights in a 2-bedroom Lake View Villa (sleeps 9) at the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa in March 2023, this will cost you 176 points. The same 2 nights in a Deluxe Studio Lake View Room (sleeps 5) would be 64 points.
    • So, as you can see it just varies depending on your room type.
    • Example: Similarly, the resort you pick plays as roll in your point system as well. 2 nights in a 2-bedroom Villa (sleeps 9) at Disney’s Old Key West Resort in March 2023, it will cost you 94 points (versus the 176 points mentioned above for Disney’s Grand Floridian).
    • For a brochure with all the Resorts and their respective points system click here!
  8. The years of contract: this varies depending on which resort you buy. For Disney’s Grand Floridian the contract is until 2064 vs. for Disney’s Riviera Resort it is until 2071.

If you frequent Disney World, and you usually stay on Disney property then becoming a DVC member is a no brainer. We sat down and looked at the cost of 2 nights in any room at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa and it was basically the cost of 1 year of my DVC contract. Monetarily it just makes sense. With your 150 points you can vacation to any of the resorts about 8 nights in a year.

We finally bit the bullet and went for it, and like I heard from other the other DVC owners… I only wish I would have done it sooner!

We have a new home at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, and we could not be more thrilled!
